What is aqiqah?

Aqiqah is a recommended act (sunnah) performed to give thanks for the birth of a child. It involves sacrificing a sheep or goat, with the meat prepared and distributed to family, neighbours and those in need. It is traditionally paired with naming the baby and shaving the head, and giving the weight of the hair in silver to charity.

  • A sunnah to celebrate and give thanks for a newborn
  • Meat is cooked and shared, including with those in need
  • Often paired with naming and the hair-shaving custom

When and how many animals

The recommended time is the seventh day after birth, though it can be done later if needed. The commonly cited sunnah is two sheep or goats for a boy and one for a girl — but scholars note that one for a boy is also acceptable if that is what a family can manage. Your provider or a religious teacher can advise on your situation.

  • Recommended on the 7th day; can be done later
  • Two animals for a boy, one for a girl (one for a boy is also accepted)
  • Ask a provider or asatizah if you're unsure

How aqiqah services work in Singapore

Because livestock sacrifice isn't practical in Singapore, most families book an aqiqah package. Providers typically arrange the sacrifice (frequently overseas, where the meat is also distributed to those in need) and then deliver cooked food to your home or cater a small kenduri. Packages differ in what's included, so compare carefully.

  • Provider arranges the sacrifice, often overseas with local distribution
  • You receive cooked food delivery or a catered kenduri in Singapore
  • Compare packages on animals, portions, menu and distribution

Choosing an aqiqah provider

Look for a Muslim-owned provider with clear pricing, transparency on where and how the sacrifice is done, and good reviews. Confirm the food is halal-catered, whether distribution to the needy is included, and the delivery date around your baby's seventh day. Browse Muslim-owned services and halal caterers to compare.
