Is E412 (Guar gum) Halal?

Our assessment

Generally halal

E412 (Guar gum) is a thickener milled from guar beans — a plant source — so it is generally considered halal.

Also known asGuar gumGuaranGuar flour

What is E412?

Guar gum is a thickening and stabilising agent made by milling the seeds (endosperm) of the guar bean. It thickens without heating and is widely used in sauces, dairy and gluten-free baking.

The guar bean's endosperm is separated and milled into a fine powder. No animal-derived material.

Why is it generally halal?

Guar gum is milled from a plant (guar beans) with no animal-derived material, so it is generally classified as halal. As always, the finished product still needs its own verification.

How to verify a product in Singapore

  1. Ingredient-level guidance is not halal certification — check the complete product, not just this ingredient.
  2. Look for recognised halal certification, and check the finished product on the official MUIS HalalSG register.
  3. When the source or processing aids are unclear, contact the manufacturer.

Ingredient guidance is not certification. Verify the finished product on the MUIS HalalSG register or with the manufacturer.
