What umrah involves

Umrah is the non-mandatory pilgrimage to Makkah that can be performed at any time of year, unlike Hajj which falls on fixed dates. The core rites — entering ihram, tawaf around the Kaaba, sa'i between Safa and Marwah, and cutting the hair — can be completed in a few hours, but most trips combine umrah with several days in Makkah and a visit to the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah.

  • Can be done any time of year (Ramadan is the busiest and most rewarding)
  • Most Singapore packages run 9–14 days, covering Makkah and Madinah
  • Not the same as Hajj — see our note on the difference below

How umrah packages work

Almost everyone from Singapore travels on a package through a licensed umrah travel agent. The package usually bundles return flights, hotels in both holy cities, ground transport, a muttawif (guide) and sometimes ziarah (visits to historical sites). The single biggest price driver is how close your hotel is to the Haram — walking distance costs more; a short shuttle ride costs less.

  • Bundled: flights, hotels, transport, guide, often meals
  • Price driver: hotel distance to the Haram, and the season
  • Ramadan and June/December school holidays are the most expensive

Visa & the Nusuk platform

Umrah requires a Saudi umrah visa. Most Singapore travellers have this handled by their agent, but visas can also be issued through Saudi Arabia's official Nusuk app/platform. Passport validity and other entry requirements apply, so confirm the current rules with your agent well before departure.

  • Agent-arranged visa is the norm for package travellers
  • Nusuk is the official Saudi platform for umrah permits and services
  • Check passport validity and current entry rules early

The meningitis vaccination (required)

Saudi Arabia requires proof of meningococcal (ACWY) vaccination for pilgrims. In Singapore this is available at polyclinics and many GP clinics; get it at least the recommended number of days before travel so the certificate is valid on arrival. Keep the vaccination certificate with your travel documents.

  • Meningococcal ACWY vaccine is mandatory for umrah
  • Available at polyclinics and GP clinics in Singapore
  • Get it early — the certificate must be valid on arrival

Choosing an agent & preparing

Pick a licensed agent with a clear itinerary, transparent hotel names (so you can check the distance to the Haram yourself) and good reviews from recent pilgrims. Attend an umrah course if you are a first-timer — several are run in Singapore and they walk you through the rites and the du'a. Then plan the practical side, including any Madinah ziarah.
