The two crossings: Woodlands vs Tuas
Singapore connects to Johor by two land crossings. The Woodlands Causeway feeds Woodlands Checkpoint in the north and lands you closest to JB city centre — City Square and JB Sentral are right there. The Tuas Second Link feeds Tuas Checkpoint in the west and is better if you are driving to Legoland, the west of Johor, or want to avoid Causeway congestion.
- Woodlands Checkpoint — closest to JB city, City Square, JB Sentral
- Tuas Checkpoint (Second Link) — better for west Johor and driving
- Both can jam badly at peak times — timing matters more than which one
By train: the KTM Shuttle Tebrau
The five-minute Shuttle Tebrau train from Woodlands CIQ to JB Sentral is the single fastest way across — you clear both immigration points at the stations, not in a bus queue. The catch is availability: tickets are released in advance and popular slots sell out quickly, especially weekends and holidays.
- Book early via KTMB's official channel — slots open weeks ahead
- Clears the jam entirely when you get a ticket
- JB Sentral connects directly to City Square mall

By bus, car & Grab
Public buses (such as the causeway cross-border services) are the cheapest option, but you disembark to clear immigration and re-board, which adds time at peak hours. Driving gives flexibility but means Vehicle Entry Permit and toll considerations, plus parking in JB. Cross-border Grab and private-hire options exist but can be pricier and subject to their own rules.
- Bus — cheapest; expect to queue at immigration on both sides
- Car — flexible; plan for VEP, tolls and JB parking
- Grab / private hire — convenient but check current cross-border rules
When to go (and when not to)
The difference between a smooth crossing and a two-hour crawl is almost entirely timing. Weekday mornings before the work rush and mid-afternoon lulls are easiest. The worst windows are Friday and Saturday evenings, Sunday nights heading back, and the eve of any public holiday.
- Best: weekday mid-morning or mid-afternoon
- Worst: Fri/Sat evenings, Sun nights, eve of public holidays
- Check live checkpoint traffic before you leave
Prayer & halal food on the way
There are surau (prayer rooms) at the checkpoints and inside JB Sentral and City Square, so you can pray shortly after crossing. Once you are through, JB is easy for halal eating — start with our day-trip food guide.
