Is E551 (Silicon dioxide) Halal?

Our assessment

Generally halal

E551 (Silicon dioxide / silica) is a mineral anti-caking agent with no animal origin, so it is generally considered halal.

Also known asSilicon dioxideSilicaSiO2

What is E551?

Silicon dioxide, or silica, is a mineral used as an anti-caking agent to keep powders free-flowing and dry. It is common in powdered foods, seasonings and supplements.

Produced from mineral silica (or synthesised as fumed/precipitated silica) to food grade. No animal-derived material.

Why is it generally halal?

Silicon dioxide is a mineral with no animal or alcohol component, so it is generally classified as halal. As always, the finished product still needs its own verification.

How to verify a product in Singapore

  1. Ingredient-level guidance is not halal certification — check the complete product, not just this ingredient.
  2. Look for recognised halal certification, and check the finished product on the official MUIS HalalSG register.
  3. When the source or processing aids are unclear, contact the manufacturer.

Ingredient guidance is not certification. Verify the finished product on the MUIS HalalSG register or with the manufacturer.

Humble Halal methodology: we classify additives by their common origin, not by any specific product. A generally-halal ingredient does not make a finished product halal-certified.
